We are pleased to announce three Payne Studentships for undergraduate summer research projects across our community in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, and beyond. These studentships are made possible by a donation from Mike Payne — a founding figure in UK computational materials science and key developer of CASTEP — to support the next generation of computational scientists.
Kevin Shao will work with Professor Gábor Csanyi in the Department of Chemistry.
Natalie Ronco will work with Dr Christoph Schran and his group on understanding water and CO2 in nanoporous carbons in the Department of Physics.
Kiran Diamond will work with Dr Seán Kavanagh in the Department of Chemistry.
We hope to be able to offer studentships again next year to students carrying out an undergraduate science or engineering degree (or equivalent) and who enjoy coding, theory, maths/physics/chemistry, and want to use simulations to tackle real research problems; with scope for projects ranging from method development to application-led discovery.
Please keep an eye out for the announcement in early 2027.
